Summary

This position is located in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, in the Resources Division in Nageezi, NM.


The incumbent serves as a cultural resources specialist for one or more parks where archeological resources comprise a major part of the park story.

Duties

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work for approximately 11 months in pay status , and you will be in a non-pay status (about 1 month - January to Mid-February) for the remainder of the year.

  • Assists Supervisor in writing proposals, planning, budgeting, and scheduling for archeological inventory, assessment, preservation, research, and other cultural resource management activities and projects.
  • Manages the Park's cultural resource data in GIS, internal park Access databases, and in NPS CRIS database and State of New Mexico Cultural Resource Inventory System (NMCRIS)
  • Advises and coordinates with Supervisor and other park staff in environmental and cultural compliance under NEPA, NHPA, NAGPRA, etc., and contributes to writing of Resource Management Plans and other agency planning documents.
  • Leads seasonal staff, interns, and volunteers at the parks to complete assigned work and projects, and reviews work assignments and deliverables from staff, partners, and contractors.
Physical Demands:
The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work are sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.



Working Environment:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-winged aircraft and helicopters is
possible.



Park Information:
Chaco Culture NHP and Aztec Ruins NM are located in the Four Corners area of New Mexico. Position is duty stationed at Chaco Culture NHP and the nearest towns are Bloomfield - 65 miles northwest, Farmington - 75 miles northwest, and Aztec - 70 miles northeast. The nearest grocery store is located at Crownpoint - 39 miles south. Schools, shopping, doctors, hospital, etc. are located in the towns of Bloomfield, Farmington, and Aztec. Closest elementary and high schools are 65 miles one way in Bloomfield. The north road into the park is dirt for 12 miles and the south road is dirt for 19 miles. Qualifications

Education
A.1. Degree
that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas:

  • History of archeology.
  • Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa.
  • Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development.
  • Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques.
  • Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work.

    AND

Six semester hours of related course work in:

  • geography, geology, or cultural geography;
  • history, historiography, or historical archeology;
  • environmental studies;
  • scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or
  • surveying;
AND


Archeological field school (must be on transcript) - usually 6 semester units

2. Related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1 (including archeological field school).

B. Combination of Education and Experience - College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.

C. Experience - Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.



Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-0193-09: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as the majority of the following: one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes the following: Conducted archeological investigations at a crew chief level or higher; Prepared reports on archeological investigations; Prepared Section 106 compliance documentation for submittal to the State Historic Preservation Office; Conducted surveys using GPS mapping techniques and preparing GIS maps and overlays; Conducted historical and archeological field investigations and report preparation.

OR
Have a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related; NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education.

Successfully completed an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). To combine education and experience, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of completed graduate education beyond the first year by 18 (or 27 for quarter hours). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.   4. If you are required to complete any USA Hire Assessments, you will be notified after submitting your application. The notification will be provided in your application submission screen and via email. The notification will include your unique assessment access link to the USA Hire system and the completion deadline. Additionally, in USAJOBS you can click "track this application" to return to your assessment completion notice.
  5. Access USA Hire using your unique assessment link. Access is granted through your USAJOBS login credentials.
  6. Review all instructions prior to beginning your assessments. You will have the opportunity to request a testing accommodation before beginning the assessments should you have a disability covered under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended.
  7. Set aside at least 3 hours to take the USA Hire assessments; however, most applicants complete the assessments in less time. If you need to stop the assessments and continue later, you can re-use your unique assessment link.
  8. Your responses to the USA Hire Assessments will be reused for one year (in most cases) from the date you complete an assessment. If
  9. future applications you submit require completion of the same assessments, your responses will be automatically reused.
