The temporary position is in the Climate Section, Communications Campaigns Service (CCS), Campaigns and Country Operations Division (CCOD), Department of Global Communications (DGC). DGC's Communications Campaigns Service develops and implements communications strategies and campaigns on the organization's key priority issues. The Climate Section works to mobilize action on climate change by communicating the science and solutions, advocating for stronger action by governments and other actors, and encouraging individual action on climate change. The Section works closely with the Secretary-General's Climate Action Team, in support of his policy objectives, and chairs the DGC Climate Lab and the climate task force of the UN Communications Group. The Communications Officer develops and executes communication strategies to promote and help deliver on the organization's objectives and outcomes. Tasks include devising strategic communication plans and campaigns, crafting compelling and credible content, and deploying tactics across various channels to engage audiences effectively, promote brand recognition, and harmonize efforts with organizational objectives. The Officer is responsible for building strong and enduring relationships with key partners and stakeholders to leverage communication opportunities, amplify campaigns and content, coordinate messaging across multiple platforms and evaluate and report on the effectiveness and outcomes of communication efforts. The incumbent reports directly to the Chief of the Section.

 

Responsibilities

Participate in the development of campaign strategies to raise awareness among target audiences, mobilize support and resources in line with the organization's policies and regulations, and drive action in support of the UN's objectives and initiatives. Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to define campaign goals, target audiences, messaging strategies, narratives and messaging, and key performance indicators (KPIs). Support the development of creative campaign concepts, content, and materials, including digital and print assets, social media posts, email communications, and multimedia content. Participate in the management of all aspects of campaign implementation, including timeline development, budgeting, resource planning, and coordination with external vendors or partners. Contribute to ensuring that all communication and campaign materials effectively convey the impact of the organization's work and comply with the organisation's standards and branding. Promote campaigns, events and collaboration with stakeholders by organizing media engagement and coverage. Support the building and maintaining relationships with existing and potential partners that can help amplify the organization's advocacy messages at local, national, regional, and/or international levels. Support coordination with partners to plan and execute joint initiatives, events, and campaigns that drive collective impact and achieve shared objectives. Contribute to coordination and collaboration with internal teams to identify external communications partnership opportunities that align with organizational goals and priorities. Monitor communication partnerships performance and outcomes, tracking progress toward established goals and adjusting as needed and provide regular updates to stakeholders. Monitor and evaluate campaign performance, providing regular reports and insights to inform future strategies and initiatives. Keep abreast of the latest trends in communications and maintain expertise in relevant and emerging technologies. Maintain confidentiality and integrity and handle sensitive information with discretion, ensuring compliance with the UN data privacy, security requirements, and standards. Monitor, analyse and report on communications approaches, activities and strategies to assess their performance and effectiveness. Collect and analyse data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables, and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation, and reporting.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, digital communications or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
